Cigarette smuggling attempt thwarted at Srpska Crnja

3. децембар 2009

On 3 December 2009, at Srpska Crnja crossing on the border with Romania, customs officers prevented an attempted smuggling of cigarettes of foreign origin.

At the entrance into the country, a Ukrainian national C.V. who drove a VW Passat declared pieces of kitchen equipment (meat mincers, kitchen knives, and espresso makers). When the vehicle was inspected, it was uncovered that it had an added false compartment behind the back seat.  Housed in this secret compartment were 1,594 packets of cigarettes of foreign origin (480 packets of Marlboro Gold cigarettes, 370 packets of Marlboro King Size cigarettes, and 744 packets of Chesterfield cigarettes) bearing Ukrainian excise tax stamps.

Minor offence proceedings were instigated against the driver C.V., and the goods and the vehicle, because of the secret compartment, were temporarily seized pending the conclusion of these proceedings.
